Get Real

Using the “coins in the bag” example from the worksheet, have students perform the actual experiment of shaking (or picking) coins from a bag. Arrange students in groups and provide them with a paper bag of coins as tallied on the worksheet. Have each group shake (or pick) a coin from the bag a maximum of 10 times, recording a tally of each coin chosen. Then, have the groups re-examine their answers on the worksheet and share with the class whether the real-life experiment mirrors the answers they provided on the sheet.

Solve

Continuing with the “coins in the bag” example, have students create a very simple hypothesis about which is the least likely coin to be shaken/picked in 3 separate rounds of shaking/picking from the bag. Arrange students in groups and have them perform 3 separate rounds of shaking/picking 10 times, creating a tally sheet of coins for each round. When all 3 rounds are finished, have students combine the tallies for the 3 rounds and determine, by counting the total number of tallies, whether their hypothesis is correct or not.
