Some of the strategies featured include:

Paragraph annotations

Students will read a paragraph and highlight the most important sentence. They should not be highlighting more than 2 sentences per paragraph. In the margins, students will write a one sentence summary of the paragraph.

Pre-reading research

Prior to assigning a book, article, short story, or informational text, give students a few topics from the material they will be reading. For example, if students are reading The Great Gatsby, have them research New York City in the 1920s.
