January

During January, students can bring in cotton balls to transform the tree into one that has been caught in a blizzard. If you have any angel hair left from the holiday season, it can be arranged artfully on the tree by a student committee. Br-r-r-r!

February

During February, children can hang big, bright red construction paper hearts on the tree. Use a 9" X 11" size sheet of red construction paper, have students fold it in half, and cut out half a heart shape. To decorate the hearts, set up a station with white chalk and two glasses of water. Have students dip the tip of the chalk into the water and draw their designs on the red heart. This gives the chalk the consistency of paint and eliminates the chalk dust. After the wintry tree, this one will brighten up your classroom.!

March

Remove your decorations from the previous month and get prepared for an "Ahhhhhhhh" experience! You will need to cut 1" X 2" squares from bright yellow crepe paper. Have students twist the squares over the end of their pencil (eraser end). Then, attach the yellow squares to the tree branches with masking tape, preferably green. When the forsythia bush is finished, and filled with yellow flowers, some people going by your classroom will do a double take because they'll think it's real. It transforms the inside of the classroom into a cheerful spring setting and makes everyone feel good.

April

This month the tree can be transformed into an egg tree. Give each student a piece of white construction paper (9" X 12"), and have them create a smaller version of the fancy water color egg listed under "Easter Eggs" above. Have them use felt markers for a brighter look. Or, blow up balloons and encircle them with string that has been saturated in colored liquid glue. Allow them to dry thoroughly, then puncture the balloon for a see through string egg. Attach a string to the end and tie the eggs to the tree for a festive touch. Place the tree on a table along with colorful picture books about spring. If someone has a pet rabbit, perhaps it could visit the classroom for a week. Place its cage under the tree.
