How to use the back to school poetry project?

TeacherVision's back to school poem is a fun creative writing activity that can serve as an icebreaker at the start of the school year.

Hand out the printed worksheet to each student and ask them to complete the sentences on how they feel about the first day of school. Once they've filled out each line, they'll have a complete back to school poem!

Why have your class complete this poetry project?

This poem is not only a great icebreaker activity for the start of the year, but it is also an opportunity to teach your students about poetry

By sharing their poems with the class, the class will feel a sense of community. As the teacher, you will also get to know your students better through their poems and have an idea of who feels exited or nervous for new school year.

Do I need to use the back to school poem on the first day of school?

Absolutely not! The back to school poem is perfect for any time within the first week of school. It can even be modified for later in the year, such as the return to school from winter break.

Which grades is this project for?

TeacherVision's back to school poem is designed for grades 2-4, but it can be modified for younger or older students.

Extension Activities

After completing the poetry project, consider turning your students' poems into pieces of art! Pass out art supplies and ask your students to draw pictures of themselves on the first day of school. Then, cut out the poem and add them to the pictures for students and parents to keep to remember their first day of school.
