** = Roland Burris was appointed by Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, shortly before the governor's impeachment, to replace Barack Obama, who vacated the seat when elected President.
*** = Hillary Clinton was elected to this seat, but was chosen by President Barack Obama to become Secretary of State. Kirsten Gillibrand, formerly a Representative, was chosen by New York governor David Paterson to replace Clinton.
**** = Dean Heller was appointed by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to fill the seat held by John Ensign, who resigned in May 2011.
## = Scott Brown won the January 2010 special election to fill the seat held by Sen. Edward Kennedy, who died in August 2009.
