Engage students in the study of the themes and text of Henry David Thoreau's essay "Civil Disobedience" and Walden. This 24-page teacher's guide to the Transcendentalist writer's work contains class discussion questions and activities for before, during, and after reading. Students will research Manifest Destiny and the Mexican War, compare Thoreau's vision with Martin Luther King's vision for society, consider the role and responsibility of government, and question if or when they would get involved in nonviolent political dissent.
