Warm-Up
Make up riddles about clothing that the children are wearing. Examples: Mike is wearing this. It is red and has long sleeves. What is it? Juana is wearing these on her feet. They are blue and match her shirt. What are they?

Procedure

  • For English Language Learners, help children identify and name articles of clothing.
  • Dress up a doll or stuffed animal in doll clothes. Pretend to hold a discussion with the toy, talking about the clothes it is wearing. Invite children to join in. Example: Well, Mr. Teddy Bear, don't you look nice! What's that you're wearing on your head? (in deeper voice) It's a hat -- a bright red hat. (in first voice) I see you're wearing the hat to keep your head warm...
  • Tell children to choose a doll or stuffed animal to dress up. Encourage them to engage in imaginative play, talking about the clothes the toy is wearing.

Enrichment
Ask children what clothes are good for certain types of weather. Relate the discussion to today's weather. For example: Flora, why did you wear a coat today?

Observation Assessment

  • Proficient - Child describes at least three items or details about an outfit clearly enough that he or she is understood by most listeners.
  • In Process - Child has difficulty naming more than a single item or two of clothing without prompting.
  • Not Yet Ready - Child points to articles of clothing, but does not yet name them.
