Seasonal Sense

Transfer webbing, or fusible webbing, is a paper-backed adhesive web that turns plain fabric into an iron-on fabric. You can find this easy-to-use webbing in craft or fabric stores. To make fusible fabric, place the rough side of the webbing against the wrong side of the fabric and press with an iron according to the manufacturer's directions (about five seconds). Let this cool, then draw the desired shape onto the fabric and cut it out. Peel off the paper backing and place the shape web side down on the project. Cover with a damp cloth and iron for about 10 seconds on wool setting. Repeat until the fabric is completely fused. Remove the cloth and press the fabric to remove any moisture.

Level: Moderately easy

Time involved: Two to three hours

Materials:

  • Transfer webbing
  • Scissors
  • 12 x 12 inch piece of yellow felt
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Copy paper
  • Pen
  • Transfer paper
  • Two 12 x 12 inch pieces of blue felt
  • Damp cloth
  • Sewing machine and thread or fabric glue
  • Polyester fill
  1. Cut a piece of fusible webbing to fit the 12 x 12 inch yellow felt. Place the felt onto the rough side of the webbing. Press for five seconds (or according to manufacturer's directions) with a hot, dry iron and let cool.

  2. Trace the sample designs and transfer them (using transfer paper) onto the yellow felt, or make your own pattern of designs.

  3. Cut the designs out of the yellow felt. Gently peel off the paper backing. Position the shapes web side down on one piece of the blue felt. Cover this with a damp cloth and press with a hot iron for 10 seconds on wool setting or according to manufacturer's directions. Repeat until the fabric is completely transferred.

  4. Place the second piece of blue felt on top of the first piece of blue felt, with the yellow designs in the middle of the two.

  5. If using a sewing machine, sew around the perimeter of the felt, leaving a 3-inch opening on one end. Or, if using fabric glue, glue along the perimeter, leaving a 3-inch opening on one end, and allow to dry completely.

  6. Turn the felt pillow right-side out and stuff the pillow with polyester fill. Stitch or glue the opening closed.
