Jazz Musician
Birthplace: New Orleans, LA

New Orleans jazz musician Louis Armstrong was known for his virtuosic and improvisational skills on the cornet and trumpet. Armstrong popularized the scat style of singing. He was a member of King Oliver's band in the 1920s, and he formed several bands of his own. During his long career, Armstrong appeared on film and stage in the U.S. and abroad. Almost 30 years after his death, "Satchmo" continues to be one of jazz's most important and influential musicians.
