Personification and Apostrophe
Personification is a figure of speech in which an author gives human qualities to inanimate objects, animals, or abstract concepts. It is an excellent device for conveying pictures and ideas with few words. For example, in one of his poems Carl Sandburg has the moon "walking," "peering," and "seeing."
DIRECTIONS: Find three examples of personification in poetry and fill in the information below.

Another very effective figure of speech is the apostrophe. This occurs when someone or something not present is spoken to as though it were present and could answer, i.e., "Jefferson, where are you when we need you?"
DIRECTIONS: Try your hand. Write one original example of personification and one of apostrophe.
