25 years of Wisconsin's Presidential Teaching Award finalists honored at anniversary recognition ceremony

2008 finalists receive special introduction and honors

This year's finalists for Presidential Teaching Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, along with finalists for the past 25 years, were recognized at a ceremony Nov. 20 at the State Capitol in Madison.

"It is indeed my honor to recognize each of you and say thank you on behalf of all of the students you teach," said State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster in her address. "Your dedication and love for the profession is exemplary. Equally important, I thank and congratulate the families of the state finalists. You are the behind-the-scenes support network for these outstanding educators. You understand and support their extraordinary dedication and the extra commitment it takes to be an exceptional teacher."

Mathematics teachers Rebecca Meyer of Valley View Elementary School in Menomonee Falls and Cheryl Wozniak of Richards Elementary School in Whitefish Bay and science teacher Karen Nesbit of Pleasant View Elementary School in Franklin were honored as Wisconsin's 2008 state finalists. Teachers who were finalists for the program since its inception in 1983 also were recognized.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the highest recognition that kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science educators may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. The program recognizes teachers for their contributions to teaching and learning and their ability to help students make progress in mathematics and science. Additionally, awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.

Deputy State Superintendent Tony Evers gave the welcome and served as master of ceremonies. The Whitefish Bay Middle School Eighth-Grade String Ensemble, under the direction of Kathryn Borghesani, performed throughout the ceremony.

A photo gallery from the event is available from the state superintendent's website. The complete list of Presidential Teaching Award finalists from 1983 to 2008 gives the names of teachers along with the school where they were teaching when recognized as a Presidential Teaching Award finalist.
