An Amazing Story

Grade Levels: K - 2

Overview

Students create sequential stories to guide a partner through a computer-generated maze. The Amazing Stories can then be compiled and shared with another class in the school.

Objectives

  • Students will develop skills in sequential writing.
  • Students will create fantasy story characters and events.

Materials

  • My Amazing Story printout, one copy for each student.
  • Craft Materials: markers, rubber stamps and stamp pads or a computer drawing program with stamps

Procedure

  1. Tell students that the class is going to create an amazing story. Begin by asking for two story characters and ten places they could visit on an adventure. Display the students choices on a chart similar to the one on their "Amazing Story" page.

  2. Have students work in pairs to illustrate each place and character listed, using markers, rubber stamps or computer-generated pictures.

  3. Go online to visit the Custom Maze Generator, build a maze, and print it out.

  4. Attach the students' illustrations to the maze and then guide the character through the maze by using directional and sequential words as appropriate.

  5. Use the illustrated maze to write a class-generated story full of sequential words such as: then, after, next, finally, first, and last. Then reread the story tracing the maze as you go.

  6. Have students use the Amazing Story page to plan and write their own maze stories. Assist students in setting the parameters of the Custom Maze Generator to create their story maze.

  7. Students can then share their stories and mazes with another class.
